Highlights from the E3 2009 Expo’s first day. There’s a lot of great stuff, PDI has the best all in one spot – Announcements, Press Conference Videos, New Game Trailers, Stage Demos and Interviews. Grab some popcorn and settle in.
It’s that time of year again, gamers around the globe wait with bated breath to hear word from their favorite developers and publishers regarding their gaming future. Some may remember when E3 gladly opened it’s doors to the public, well… those days are back! Games, girls, gamer girls… Here’s a Recap of Day One.
Auth. Note -The videos with the PDI logo take around 10secs to load, sorry – we’re not well funded (not funded at all, really). If you find a video that is not working, let me know!
Announcements
Coming soon to the Xbox 360 are two sweet new marketplace additions. Okay, one super-sweet, the other moderately sour… combined to make just regular sweet. First, Games on Demand will allow owners to purchase and download popular titles straight to their hard-drives, costs are said to be on track with retailers prices. And the sour-ish bit… well, you’re going to start having to pay for Avatar clothes. I know, I know – you are crushed, boohoo. More on those in the press conference below.
PSP Go to be released October 1st for $249. Little is known about the PSP Go: It has 16GB of built-in flash memory that can be expanded with Memory Stick Micro, game download capabilites, a smaller screen than PSP-3000 (3.8inch vs 4.3inch), and has bluetooth.
…but one (such as myself) may make certain observations:
1. It’s screen slides up to reveal the controls underneath, like your sliding cellphone.
2. While closed, you only see the screen – so it’s logical that you may be able to access content (movies, pictures, music) stored on the device via touch-screen – think iPhone.
3. Downloadable games suggest that the Go will have Wi-Fi, possibly even a standard net browser.
Sony’s New Motion Controller was also catching some interest. When used in conjunction with Sony’s Eye Toy camera, the controller (which looks like a microphone with a light-up bulb for a head) can be moved around in three-dimensional-space and the movements will be translated on-screen. The anyone familiar with the principles of motion-capture(Mo-Cap) should have a good grasp on how this works, if the lit-up bulb of the controller comes closer, the Eye Toy sees it get ‘bigger’, and will there for make what ever you have on screen get bigger to match; swing the controller around and the object on screen will swing as well. But what happens when you hold it behind your back?? Well, it is still a prototype – I mean hell, it doesn’t even have a name yet – so there is plenty of tie to work the kinks out.
Activision’s DJ Hero is looking better as it’s fall release draws nearer. The game itself is similar to the wildly popular Guitar Hero, requiring well-timed button presses and hand movements to produce the best possible sound. DJ Hero, however, puts a spin on things — I feel horrible about that pun, moving on — three buttons are embedded in the new peripheral’s record platter used to cue up different samples, and spinning the platter produces a scratching effect as you would expect. Also a cross faded, special effects knob, and ‘euphoria’ button (equivalent to ’star-power’) are all placed for use with your none-spinning hand. DJ Shadow, DJ AM, and DJ Z-Trip will be lending their likenesses and some mixes to the game, so crank up the Hi-Fi, slap down some vinyl, and get practicing.
New Super Mario Bros. for Wii. Yes, ‘New’ is in the title. With an emphasis on co-op, NSMB can be played with up to four players – there are even some puzzle solving elements which require one player to pick-up and throw another. As always, coin collecting is all important. Watch the Nintendo Press Conference below for more.
